I would like to find and account for the c. 10Gb lost between the 56Gb of my HD and the 16Gb reported free disk space plus the 29.5Gb reported as used (both by DIX and by adding up the info windows). Is there any way DIX can help me here?

Thanks a lot,

Aweel

This may be because DIX can't read all directories due to missing access rights.

Please read this thread (please also follow the link to another thread in the last post in that thread).

Does this explains the missing 10GB?

Thanks for your help. Yes, DIX now shows the 10Gb as 'Other files'. But what are they? Perhaps I'd better explain: I'd like to clone my disk to my new laptop. I have a good working and well tuned system now, so I would quite like to keep that. But at the same time, I don't like the idea of losing 10Gb of valuable disk space if I don't have to. Are these 'Other files' useful, even necessary, or not? How do I find out?

I'd really appreciate any help!

Thanks a lot,

Adriaanh

You need to run Disk Inventory X with root privileges. Here is a thread about it.
To accomplish this, try "Pseudo" or login as root (you may first need to enable the root account with the "NetInfo Manager" in /Applications/Utilities, as the root account is disabled by default).

Are "other files" still shown when you have loaded the whole drive in DIX?
