Under Mac OS X 10.4, it would be really nice if Disk Inventory X could query the Spotlight database directly. From what I can tell Spotlight already collects all of the data that Disk Inventory X would need.

The "mdls" command can be used to query the Spotlight database from the command line.

For example:
Code:

mdls ~/Documents/*

I will investigate how Spotlight can be used to speed things up or to enhance Disk Inventory X.
But I'm currently working on the next release and please understand that it won't have any Spotlight support.

As far as I understand Spotlight it doesn't have any surplus value for what Disk Inventory X (currently) needs, as all the Information DIX needs can be retrieved from the filesystem or the Finder (so Spotlight isn't needed for that - although Spotlight holds this information, too).
But as I stated above, I will take a close look!

Yes, it does. I haven't found any incompatibilities yet.

It's pretty fast here. Maybe Disk Inventory X slows down when there's a lot of files....OS X has a lot of files, but I usually don't scan my system drive. I was looking for a tool like DIX for file numbers, but sincee it's not as big an effect on performance there really isn't much.

How is development? been pretty quiet lately, stuck on the beta. Which is fine, just that I don't like it when the current version is a beta for long. Perhaps there's not many contributors, odd for such a useful utility.

I'm really hope I will be able to release a new version in the near future (please don't ask for a concrete date as I'm quite busy).
The only feature which remains to be implemented for 1.0 is the color customization (see here).
But then starts the testing and localization phase...

Please don't be concerned about the "Beta". The current version was intended to be 1.0, but went public by accident.

Cheers,
Tjark
